We are proud to announce that the 2004 Sandra Sagear Wall of Courage Honorees will be honored at a presentation on Tuesday, October 26, 2004, 6:00 – 7:00 pm, (preceding the School Board meeting), at Plymouth High School, 8400 Beck Road, Canton, Michigan.

All interested parties are welcome to join us as we recognize the 2004 Sandra Sagear Wall of Courage Honorees.  These individuals are the first group of people to have their names added to the wall.

Thanks to the generous donations of many people, the Sagear Wall was completed in time for the opening of Plymouth High School and there were extra monies that went to the Sagear-Rotary Scholarship.  The Plymouth A.M. Rotary Club has adopted the scholarship program and we are happy to announce that 5 scholarships were given out in 2003 and 3 were awarded in 2004.

The Sandra Sagear Committee, Plymouth-Canton Community Schools and Rotary Club of Plymouth A.M. are proud to recognize individuals who have overcome adversity. They have displayed courage, perseverance, spirit, and creativity in succeeding in achieving an education, despite a physical, mental or emotional barrier when they were a student. They have also shown an appreciation for others and a commitment to their community.  This award is named after Sandra Sagear a 1969 graduate of the original Plymouth High School who imagined and believed she could succeed as she lived everyday with Polio.

Individuals are eligible to be considered for the Sagear Wall five years post graduation.  Current Plymouth-Canton seniors are eligible for the Sagear-Rotary Scholarship.  These individuals honor the courage and perseverance that Sandy demonstrated every day of her life.

The Sagear Memorial Wall is located in Plymouth High School..  This wall honors the extraordinary effort that Sandy and other young people made to receive an education and it is a respectful tribute to these students and their families.

Dennis Jones, local architect, artist, and sculptor, designed and constructed this wall.  He developed a dramatic presentation featuring an 18' x 9' multi-media design, which includes an alabaster sculpture and an extraordinary frame to display the names of all honorees.

How do you add a name to the wall and do so in a way that is respectful and lets the world know what outstanding persons the honorees are?  The simple answer is, it’s pretty tough.  We didn’t want to just attach name plaques to the wall.  Instead we used the signatures of the honorees.  Dennis Jones, etched the signatures, (actual size), embedding them into the dark border directly above the sculpture.  The wall is large, but we wanted the viewer to have to walk up to the wall to read the names of the honorees,  (similar to the Vietnam Veterans Wall).  It is our hope that the signatures would make the names more personal and meaningful.

We are also happy to announce that the names of Scholarship Awardees will also be added to the frame around the base of the wall in a few months. Next spring, the Sagear Committee will be looking for ways to improve the signage around the Wall.
